Blood Mountain Pictures

The summit of Blood Mountain reaches the elevation of 4,458 ft. which is the highest point on the Appalachian Trail in GA.  This is one of my favorite hikes in Georgia because of the panoramic views and the versatility of the spur trials.  These trails can accommodate day hikers and over night hikers depending on the route they choose.

One of the more popular trials to reach the top of Blood Mountain is taking the Bryon Herbert Reese Trail. There is a parking area at the trail head that can accommodate multiple vehicles. The Bryon Herbert Trail is only 7/10 mile in length connecting to the Appalachian Trail at Flatrock Gap (3,420 ft). At Flatrock Gap take a right to continue on north on the AT to reach the top of Blood Mountain. On your left is the Freeman trail which will bypass the summit. Continue the ascent for about a mile through several switchbacks. Once you have reached the top you will see the Blood Mountain Shelter at the Summit. This was built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conversation Corps. Picnic Rock is located in front of the shelter. From Picnic Rock the views from the summit of Blood Mountain are spectacular.

How to get there:

Bryon Herbert Reese Trail Head, Blood Mountain , AT at Neels Gap,  Walasi-Yi Center.

From Atlanta take 400 North until it ends. Take a Left on GA 60/US 19 towards Dahlonega up and over the hill. Take a Right ¼ mile past the McDonalds and continue on GA 60/US 19. On the Left hand side there will be a Walmart. (This is one of the last places to get any last minute items). Go about ½ mile and take a left at the intersection and continue on GA 60/US19. About 8-10 miles take a right at Stonepile Gap. This is where GA 60 and US 19 separate. Go about 5-8 miles on US 19 and you will come to stop sign at Turners Corner. It is well marked and is where US19/ US129 intersect. Take a left and continue north for about 8 miles. You will enter Neels Gap and will see the Walasi-Yi Center on the right hand. The Walasi-Yi Center has a gift shop, camping supplies etc. Behind the store is great view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The parking is only for store customers. Go ½ mile on north on US 19/129 to the second road on the left hand side that is the entrance to the Herbert Bryon Reese Parking Area & Trail Head.
